RE: 2014 USA Volleyball Girls’ Junior National Championships

The 2014 USA Volleyball Girls’ Junior National Championships (NOTE: The tournament does not go by the term Junior Olympics any longer!) will be at the Minneapolis Convention Center in Minneapolis, MN from June 24-July 3 (different age groups and divisions will begin and end play at different times during this period. Check the Event Page at USA Volleyball’s web site for specific dates for your Age division).

The Carolina Region will hold its competition for our National Bids for the Junior National Championships at our overall Regional Championships tournaments on April 12, 2014 (Sites: TBA - specific assignments for the age groups will be posted shortly but will be in central part of the state - generally Winston-Salem area to Triangle area).  We hope this letter will answer some of your questions on the process.

BIDS:
USA Volleyball will have a National and American Division in the CLUB Championships again this season in ages 12-18 (which is where Region bids are). The bids for OPEN and USA divisions are earned at National Qualifiers.  There is also a PATRIOT Division that does not require bids (see the Entry information for more information on that division).  The Bids for the CLUB division (National & American) are earned in the Regions and Qualifiers. So, our bids are in the National and American divisions of the CLUB Championships. The following is a breakdown of how many bids we have in each age group (NOTE: 2014 Bid Allocations for Regions are now CONFIRMED below):

  • 12 Club - 18 Club: We have ONE bid available in the National Division AND ONE bid available in the American Division (TWO teams total from Carolina Region)

The Following must be met in order to compete for the Carolina Region National Bids for the Junior National Championships:

  • All teams must play in THREE Carolina Region Regular season sanctioned events to be eligible for the CLUB Regional Championship tournaments. At least one of those events must have been a Carolina Region one-day tournament. The other two events may consist of any two of the following if held BEFORE the Regional Championships:
    • One or Two Carolina Region one-day tournaments
    • Any two-day Carolina Region sanctioned event whose only criteria is date of entry (examples: Quest pre-season tournament, the Queen City Classic, Junior Hi Neighbor (not eligible for 2014 since after Regionals)
    • Only ONE of the following tournaments: a National Qualifier held before Regionals or any other Carolina Region sanctioned event with a restricted access entry criteria (example: MAPL Raleigh).
  • The Tournament Entry Deadline for the April 12 Regional Championships tournament is April 5, 2014 ($175 Entry fee due by this deadline to enter Overall Regionals).  Teams have to QUALIFY at the March 22 and March 29 East/West Regional Championships in order to be ELIGIBLE to play April 12.  The TOP FOUR finishers from SITE 1 (only) in each age group from the March 22 and 29 East/West Regional Championships will QUALIFY for the April 12 Regional Championships.  We will email the qualifying teams with entry instructions after each tournament.  NOTE:  If your team does NOT QUALIFY after March 22 or March 29 but you are still interested in a JNC BID, please email the Region Office with your interest anyway by the deadline below.  If we do not have any interest from QUALIFIED teams then we may still award bids to teams that do not qualify for April 12 event!).
  • NEW THIS SEASON - National entry forms will go directly to USA Volleyball (they will not be sent to the Region). Please read through the Pre-Tournament Manual thoroughly for all National entry procedures. OPEN teams that are interested in an At-Large must be entered in AES by April 23. Club teams interested in a Re-allocation bid must be entered in AES by May 12.
    1. FIRST  STEP IN 2014 PROCESS - ALL teams interested in competing for one of our BIDS to the 2014 JNC MUST email their interest by APRIL 5, 2014 (updated deadline).  Please include in that email:  Teamname, Age Group, and team rep.  NOTE: If your team does NOT QUALIFY after March 22 or March 29 but you are still interested in a JNC BID, please email the Region Office with your interest anyway by the deadline. If we do not have any interest from QUALIFIED teams then we may still award bids to teams that do not qualify for April 12 event!).
    2. REMINDER - only submit an interest email if you WILL ACCEPT the bid if you earn one. Should a team/club not accept a bid that they earn at the National Bid tournament, the Region will place future sanctions on the club when entering future National events.
    3. All teams that earn bids will need registered chaperones on their roster at the Championships. REMINDER: this season all adults affiliated with Junior teams must clear a background screen which takes 3-5 business days to process. So, teams WILL not be able to add chaperones on site!!! USAV recommends registering TWO chaperones with your team in case a last minute emergency prevents the original chaperone from attending. Register your chaperones as soon as you earn your bid! Your chaperone will need to download a chaperone responsibility form for signature (that form is turned in on site and not mailed to USAV beforehand). To register a Chaperone with the Region, direct them to our Online Registration Information page. This will need to be done shortly after you earn your bid so the background screen can be performed.
    4. Again this season, ALL coaches on the roster must be IMPACT certified. USA Volleyball WILL NOT offer IMPACT clinics on site this year. If you have a coach that needs to be IMPACT certified, then see the USAV website for possible online courses (the new On-Demand IMPACT Course is available at that link also).

PROCEDURE FOR DETERMINING BIDS:

As we have combined the Regional Championships and the National Bid tournaments again this season, we will probably have some teams competing at the Regional Championships that have not expressed an interest in the National Bids. We will award our National Bid to the HIGHEST finisher among the teams that have submitted an interest in the bids. The American bid will be awarded to the next highest finisher. Based on this process, we may need to have a playoff that is separate from the Regional Championships playoffs (for example - the final two teams competing for a bid both lose in the semi-final round. In that case, we would need those two teams to play a match as well). All teams competing for a bid should not leave the April 12 site until it is confirmed a National and American bid winner has been established based on the tournament results.

SUMMARY:

Please discuss this opportunity with your team and parents NOW. If you would like to compete for our bid to the 2014 USA Volleyball Girls’ Junior National Championships, please EMAIL the Region office with your interest by April 5, 2014 (updated deadline).   LATE EMAILS WILL ONLY BE ACCEPTED AT THE DISCRETION OF THE JUNIOR DIVISION (and usually only if we don’t have any other entries in that division)! Please get them in by the deadline!

For additional information on the Junior National Championships, go to USA Volleyball’s web site - The Pre-Tournament Entry Books for the Championships are now posted on the USA Volleyball web site. Teams may get a head start now filling out the paperwork and submitting their rosters online. April 5 is our REGIONAL DEADLINE!  Once we determine our bid winners, we will notify USAV of our bid winners. NOTE: Teams that do not earn a bid at our National Bid tournaments MAY still earn a re-allocated bid from USAV once all the Regions report their bid winners (some Regions don’t use all their bids). So, if interested in a re-allocated bid, please check that on the entry forms and keep your fingers crossed! Re-allocated bids would come from USAV and not the Carolina Region.

All teams should note that the Region has NOT set aside any money to help pay for national entry fees, and all teams should plan on raising the full costs needed to participate in the Championships. Good luck with the rest of your season, and please email if you have any questions!

If your team wants to compete for a National Bid, submit tournament entry (by 4/5/14 if you QUALIFY 3/22 or 3/29) and EMAIL interest by April 5, 2014:

Reminder - teams still need to enter the Regional Championships tournament ($175) by April 5, 2014 also! You may confirm your tournament entries on our Points System, as always.
