Commissioner's Corner

Karl Owen

The 2004-2005 USA Volleyball Season is over, and most of us are headed outdoors for summer volleyball. On the way out, though, let's take a look at what we did.

We had 389 teams play in 58 tournaments (for 2129 tournament registrations, and 612 pools). We played 3220 matches and 586 playoff matches. That's a lot of volleyball, and that alone is worth celebrating.

It took a lot of people to make all of that volleyball happen. First of all, it took you, our players and coaches. Without you, the Carolina Region does not exist. Next I would like to thank our officials and tournament directors for all of their work.

My special thanks go out to our staff. Kevin Wendelboe, our Director of Operations, scheduled and recorded every one of those matches, along with his other duties, including being the first point of contact for anyone who wants to reach the Region. Chuck McCracken, our Director of Programs & Member Development managed our officials and High Performance programs, in additional to spreading the word about volleyball from one end of North Carolina to the other (and beyond).

Finally, I would like to thank the Carolina Region Board of Directors. The Board does the planning and makes the tough decisions which keep our Region running smoothly. Thank you for all you do.

In addition, we had a number of teams and individuals who left their mark on the National volleyball scene. These accomplishments are listed in the Regional Achievement article in this newsletter, but I want to make special mention of International Jammers, who won the Men's A National Championship this year. As far as I know, this is the first time a Carolina Region team has won a division national championship. Congratulations!
