| Motion 1: Approve the minutes from the May 6, 2001 Annual Meeting of the Carolina Region Board of Directors. MSA |
- Election of Directors - Chuck McCracken:
Chuck went over the positions open for election and the nominees that had expressed interest in running.. Nominations from the floor were accepted for the following positions:
- Treasurer - will need to appoint as no candidates from within the Board. Jessica Keenan and Gary Odle have expressed interest in the position. Jessica does have a financial background educationally and with work-experience. Consensus was that Jessica seemed to meet the financial background needed to be Treasurer and that Chuck should discuss the position with her for possible appointment. Motion by Karl, second by John to close nominations. MSA
- Secretary - Dale Hartough is willing to continue in that position. Motion by Ray, second by Karl to close nominations and elect by acclamation.
- Women's Player Representation - Amber Fulk is willing to continue. Motion by Ray, second by Karl to close nominations and elect by acclamation.
- Men's A Division rep - Charlie Yang has been in that role. Most likely will be playing in Men's Bronze next year, so it would be more applicable for him to be appointed as Men's B Rep. No candidates at this time. Chuck will continue to see if any interested volunteers can be found.
- Women's A Rep - no candidates at this time. Chuck will continue to see if any interested volunteers can be found.
- Men's BB Division Rep - Wade Brence is willing to continue. Motion by Ray, second by Karl to close nominations and elect by acclamation.
- Women's BB Division Rep - no candidates available. Chuck will continue to see if any interested volunteers can be found.
- JO Boys Coordinator - Brian Magee is only candidate. Bill's duties have changed and is unable to continue so has withdrawn his name from the ballot. Motion by Ray, second by Karl to close nominations and elect by acclamation.
- Men's B Rep - one year remaining on term and Charlie Yang has expressed interest to be nominated for it. Motion by Karl, second by John to appoint Charlie to the Men's B Rep.
- Meritorious Service Awards:
Chuck described the purposes of the Meritorious Service and mentioned that past winners can be found at the Archive's Section of the Web site. The Region can recognize up to Five Individuals or Groups for outstanding service to Volleyball in North Carolina. Individuals/Groups may only receive the award once under current regulations. The 2002 Carolina Region Meritorious Service Award Winners are:
- Presented to Bill Shook - Bill has been very active in the Asheville area in promoting volleyball. He is a college coach, Junior Club Coach and Administrator, and has served on the Carolina Region Board of Directors since 1998. He was instrumental in getting the Junior Hi Neighbor Tournament started and has represented the Carolina Region at numerous National meetings promoting the junior game.
- Presented to Kevin Wendelboe - Kevin has served as the Office Manager since September, 1993.
The Carolina Region is proud of our 2002 Meritorious Service Award Winners and appreciates their service to volleyball in North Carolina!
- State of Volleyball - At the International level volleyball is pretty healthy. The FIVB tours have had good sponsorship. They have just approved a new type of volleyball called "Challenge Volleyball" that will be played on a lower net (like six-foot and under leagues we've seen). In the US, volleyball is not as healthy. It is not necessarily in dire straits, but it is not going as well as we'd like. The financial health of USAV is weak, but they are taking steps to turn their financial picture around. In the past they budgeted unwisely by counting income that depended on the National Teams' performance in big money tournaments. When their performance didn't meet expectations, USAV was left with trying to come up with other sources of money. Most recently they asked the Regions to prepay 2002 memberships so they could pay 2001 bills, which again, is not fiscally sound. But, for the most current budget they did not use future income to pay present bills. They have budgeted a surplus to build up reserves to handle their bills and to plan for Olympic years. Thus, this year will be a very tight year fiscally as they change over to the new system. They are largely guilty of having more good ideas and things that they want to do than available money to do those things. It is Chuck's desire that they will concentrate on developing a unified long-range plan within USAV so they can concentrate their focus on completing the goals within that long-range plan. All that being said, USAV is still recognized as one of the premier NGB's by the USOC and does do a lot of things right. In the Carolina Region, we still have some challenges to conquer. We need to bring new adults into our playing ranks. We need to help the juniors that advance out of the juniors stay involved as adult players. We ran some sanctioned leagues in Greensboro that did hit some adults that weren't part of the Region before. For juniors, we have continued to grow (close to 2000 girls this year). We needed 30-40 courts each junior weekend to accommodate all our junior teams. And we've had enough courts and tournament directors to actually accommodate all those teams. We had a 13 and under division this year for the first time. We need to keep developing the younger age group so we can have a 12 and under division. A lot of our teams are traveling out-of-region to Qualifiers and large tournaments. But a lot of those teams are 16 and older. We need to get the younger teams to start traveling to these larger tournaments so they can get the benefits of better competition and bring them back into the Region. Another focus should be our growth in officials. We're always thin, but we do seem to get them covered. But, we do have some very good junior officials that are in our Region that we should keep developing and encouraging. We are continuing to develop our High Performance program. We've hired Sam Carem, Craig Lenniger, Ashley Powers, Tami Darwin, and Chuck McCracken as the coaches in the program. Hal Clifton is going to join as an apprentice coach. We're going to bring some kids in for a week-long camp and then select teams to go out to Salt Lake City for the World Cup. We need to continue to identify and find people to serve on the Board of Directors or as volunteers with the organization. We have a lot of years of experience on the Board, but we need to identify new people to take over. So, volleyball in general is very healthy and it has lots of opportunities. We need to continue to look for ways to influence volleyball around us and make a difference.
- Old Business - none
