| Motion 1: Approve the minutes from the May 7, 2000 Annual Meeting of the Carolina Region Board of Directors. MSA |
- Election of Directors - Chuck McCracken:
Chuck went over the positions open for election and the nominees that had expressed interest in running.. Question raised as to whether we want to put a person into a position that has announced up front that they cannot be as active in the organization as the bylaws require. Is it better to have a "name" in the position or to leave it vacant and have Chuck appoint someone into the position? It was suggested to start a program to try to identify people during the course of the year, talk with them, and work with them to become active participants to the Board. Chuck suggested listing the position as Vacant but list those interested in being in the position in "name" (as interim rep) until a more permanent person can be found. Decided for this meeting to elect the people willing to be a contact for that position but list them as "Interim" in case another volunteer steps forward with more time to commit to the position. Nominations from the floor were accepted for the following positions:
- Associate Commissioner - Karl Owen is willing to run again on the "Interim" basis. Motion by Fred, second by Ray to nominate Karl Owen. MSA Motion by Fred, second by Dan to close nominations. MSA Karl Owen elected by acclamation.
- Men's Player Rep - John Boger is willing to run again. Motion by Dan, second by Karl to close nominations. MSA John Boger elected by acclamation.
- Women's AA Rep - Sharon Biggs is willing to run again. Motion by Ray, second by Karl to close nominations. MSA Sharon Biggs elected by acclamation.
- Men's AA Rep - Greg Adas is willing to run again on the "Interim" basis. Motion by Karl, second by Fred to close nominations. MSA Greg Adas elected by acclamation.
- Women's B Rep - no nominations were submitted. Chuck will talk with Susie to see if she wants to fill on the "Interim" basis.
- Men's B Rep - no nominations were submitted.
- Junior Girl's Rep - Marilyn Thompson is willing to run again. Motion by Karl, second by Dan to close nominations. MSA Marilyn Thompson elected by acclamation.
- Commissioner - Chuck is willing to run again if no one else is willing. Motion by Fred, second by Dan to close nominations and elect Chuck with many Thanks! MSA
Vacancies to be Filled:
- Women's A Rep - China is leaving the state for another job, so will have to resign the position with one year remaining on the term. Amber was asked if she wants to fill the position and said she would consider it. Chuck will discuss it with Amber.
- Women's BB Rep - we will continue to look for candidates to fill this position.
- Meritorious Service Awards:
Chuck described the purposes of the Meritorious Service and mentioned that past winners can be found at the Archive's Section of the Web site. The Region can recognize up to Five Individuals or Groups for outstanding service to Volleyball in North Carolina. Individuals/Groups may only receive the award once under current regulations. The 2001 Carolina Region Meritorious Service Award Winners were:
- Presented to Ben Guiliano - Ben has been a Tournament Director for several years at Barber Park in Greensboro. Ben runs Adult, Junior, and Coed tournaments throughout the season and has been a big supporter of volleyball in the Greensboro area.
- Presented to Ingrid Wicker - Ingrid is the Head Volleyball Coach at NC Central University in Durham and is the current Women's Player Rep on the Carolina Region Board of Directors. Ingrid hosts several Adult and Junior tournaments each season at NCCU, and has hosted a CAP clinic for the Region in the past. Ingrid is always willing to help advance volleyball in the state when she is asked!
- Presented to Randy Follas - Randy was one of the founders of the Wake County Volleyball Club and was Tournament Director of the WCVC Christmas Classic for several years. He has since moved to Salisbury where he has begun to introduce the benefits of hosting volleyball tournaments to local Salisbury schools. Randy is a Junior National Rated Referee and is very active with Junior Officiating.
The Carolina Region is proud of our 2001 Meritorious Service Award Winners and appreciates their service to volleyball in North Carolina!
- Other Business - Fred talked about his duties as ROD Vice-President. He outlined a plan that he intends to present to the ROD at the May meetings in Milwaukee. He pointed out that $6 is sent to USAV for every member. He will present a breakdown of where that money goes and what percent of the budget that represents. USAV traditionally raises money by sponsorships and that is hard to predict and has gotten them in trouble in the past. USAV is constantly in a cash-flow problem and have to dip into credit to operate. Thus, Fred will propose creating a ROD Endowment Fund with the Region's leading the way. Two functions: create a source of income for USAV and second relieve the burden of the administrative fees in the future. He will propose for each registrant that the Regions send in $10. It will be set aside and cannot be touched for any other purpose. At a point in future, we'll be able to stop having to send in the $10 per member and can use that money in the Regions and perhaps send in less administrative fees. Fred wanted the Boards feedback as to whether they would buy this proposal and how he should present it. It was suggested to point out things that USAV has not been able to do because they didn't have the money (World League, lost players, etc.).
- State of Volleyball - Juniors continue to grow faster than we can grow referees, quality coaches, and almost facilities. We need to develop some smaller one-day workshops to help educate the beginning coaches/parents that are just helping out. We need to bring a CAP clinic back to the Region next year. Society issues are starting to creep into volleyball also. It seems kids are not learning responsibility anymore. We have parents and kids who are more selfish and affecting the team around them. Parents need to care about their kids. We've had more problems with parents at our tournaments than ever. One thing to discuss at the retreat is in this electronic age, how can we run the Region more efficiently (fewer meetings but more discussions/work by email). The sport is still growing so we need to do what we can to not get run over. If the faces in this room are the same 3-5 years from now then it will run us over. Maybe we do need to change the representation to geographic boundaries (and not by division). One positive thing for us is that this past Monday we signed a lease for a new Office in Clemmons.
- Old Business - none
- New Business - none
- Meeting adjourned - Motion by Karl, second by Dan to adjourn Annual Meeting. MSA 2:00 pm.
